I got a lot of dislikes in life, but I can safely say, I don't really HATE anything. The ONLY thing that I HATE with a passion has to be censorship. Honestly, I don't understand what the problem is with cuss words. They're just words. Fuck, Shit, Ass, Bitch, Titties, Pussy, Dick, Damn, Hell, NIGGA, Fag. It's all the same. They're just words. If you weren't raised in this world, they would just be mere phonetics to you. You wouldn't know the meaning. Fuck and Shit, I don't know their origins. We all know Bitch is a female dog. Ass is a damn donkey. Fuck it.
My main problem with censorship is when it comes to music. You can censor movies all day, there are just some things in movies you may not want to explain to your kids. Fuck that! They'll see or experience that shit one day. My biggest pet peeve is the editing of lyrics. The most famous lyric edit in my book is, Black Eyed Peas "Let's Get Retarded". On the radio, what do you hear? "Let's get it started." I hate the radio. You get used to one set of lyrics, then when you get the CD, you get a whole new experience. I hate being misled.
Coming from me, I don't use very many cuss words in my lyrics. Why? I don't really have a reason, I just don't find a need to use gratuitous cuss words. This doesn't mean I don't respect other artists who cuss in their songs. I roll with Ace Boogie and Skeem, don't I?
What I especially hate when they censor songs is: they censor shit that doesn't even need to be censored. Once again, Black Eyed Peas. Remember when they interpolated Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "I Wonder If I Take You Home"? Remember the lyrics, "Na, na, na, na. Don't funk with my heart?" They edited the word "funk" out, I guess because it sounded like "fuck".
I bring this up because, every time M.T. Bag tries to get a show, we gotta edit our shit in order to be considered. That's our music. If you don't respect it as is, we'll take our business elsewhere.
What I've noticed though, rockstars and popstars get a little more breathing room than rapstars do. Remember The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up"? They could say "bitch" on the radio, but when Jay-Z released "99 Problems", guess what word they edited out.
Music is an expression, right? Why can't we freely express ourselves? Somebody, somewhere, is gonna get offended regardless. What happened to freedom of speech?
It's a big double standard. Ace's mom has this rule in her house. You can't cuss. It's her house, her rules. Yet, when somebody's in trouble, she cusses more than I do. "You better pick that motherfucking shit up!" Funny shit. When I was 5, I used to watch Metallica on tour and they'd cuss. I used to mimic the cuss words and apparently, it was cute. When I got older, mom bought Kid Rock's "History Of Rock" album. On his song, "American Badass", he said, "You can roll with Rock, or you can suck my dick." My mom would turn the volume down when he said that, I never understood why, she cussed more than I do now. They're JUST WORDS!
I think the radio should allow cuss words. I think it's WEBN that allows cuss words, I'm not sure. I just know there's an Alice In Chains song I ALWAYS hear and the lyrics go, "Shove my nose in SHIT!" So, on public radio, rockstars can cuss, but rappers can't? That's unfair!
Like Sam Cooke said, "A change us gonna come."
That's my rant....
