Generation Y

You may have heard of The Baby Boomers(1946-1964) and Generation X(1965-1980).

The '80's babies and then some might find themselves categorized as members of "Generation Y", also known as The Net Generation, Millennials, Echo Boomers, iGeneration , The Google Generation and in the words of Boogie (The Text Messaging Era).

The Baby Boomers saw, WWII, X saw, Vietnam. There are some pretty amazing things you can find out of these eras, but when it comes to our present, we haven't really done a damn thing except for lose our culture.

What are we about in Generation Y? Well.....

Bill Clinton, The Internet and Instant Messaging, music downloads, text messages and cell phones, crazy cable, big ass tv's, DVD's, American Idol, The Recession, Barack Obama, War On Terror, et cetera.

They say, 'the internet has made the world smaller'. This is good in many ways, it eliminates the suspense of waiting for your international pen pal's response. Yet, The Internet is the murderer of American culture.

Now, this one goes to my '90's babies....do you remember the suspense of your favorite artist releasing an album, and the only way you could get it was buying it? I remember when Napster was free. I messed around with it once, before they wised up and decided to get paid off of the free music.

Do you remember when that smash summer movie came to the theatres and going to the movies was cool? Now, you can Youtube shit and download movies before they come out, shit's fucked up...

Now, it's not Generation Y's fault for our cultural downfall, it's a combo of X and The Baby Booms, they're the suits who made the Internet and such. What does this mean for our future as GY's?

It means we can't match or exceed the success of our heroes we grew up on. There will never be a band that will sell as much as a Nirvana, a Metallica, or even The Beatles. The way it is, it's simply not possible. Disney will never match their classics, the ones we grew up on, Lion King, Jungle Book, Aladdin, and so on.

What is Generation Y?

It's an era of utter bullshit where the dumbest things become popular. People make fools of themselves, lip syncing songs, Miley Cyrus' beef with Selena Gomez, the other videos by the "Chocolate Rain" guy, the works....

We're musicians so let me break down album sales over the years to you. Let me show you an artist we all know......um.....uh......hmm.... Britney Spears.

(Before I show you this sickening sight, let me break RIAA certification to those who don't know. Gold=500,000 copies sold. Platinum=1,000,000 and Diamond=10,000,000. Also, these sales I'm mentioning are referring to sales in the US)

Ms.Spears made her debut in 1999, the turning point of MP3's, this is when Napster was still in the making.

...Baby One More Time- 14,000,000 (1999) Goddamn!

Oops!...I Did It Again- 10,000,000 (2000) Notice, 4 Million buyers decided to download because Limewire stepped upon the scene.

Britney- 4,000,000 (2001) Since '99, 10 Million fans decided they didn't care anymore.

In The Zone- 2,000,000 (2003) These are rapper sales, two years from now Frostwire and Bearshare will arrive.

Blackout- 1,000,000 (2007) Ugh...

Circus- 500,000+ as of right now (2008) "Still think downloading music for free is no big deal?"

Think about it Generation Y, what have we done to a perfectly good culture?

Just had to get that off my chest....

Oh yeah.....

Last, but, not least, if you are out there reading this, keep coming back, and drop some comments, it's so lonely on this blog.........."Going out of my mind inside of these dimes...it must be a sign o' the times."
