Many an emcee wishes he/she was as good or had the skills of another emcee. Honestly, the writing of lyrics can be altered, as well as style, cadence, rhythm, et cetera....Now that I think about it, the same applies to that of the producing game. What sets me apart from the illest producers ever, I cannot play a musical instrument. I guess because I never really had the opportunity to sit down and learn. Just Blaze can play drums, The Neptunes play guitars, horns, drums, etc, and Seth Boogie plays the trombone, the kazoo(ha) and the bass guitar. With all this said, I think gaining a spot as a top producer is kinda impossible unless I learn some instruments. In the mean time, I can only sit back and listen to ill ass beats. Here are the top 5 beats I wish I made.
Kanye West ft Mos Def, Freeway, & The Harlem Boys Choir "Two Words". Sampling Mandrill's "Peace And Love". In case you're not sample savvy, Mandrill's "Children Of The Sun" was used as the main music behind Shawty Lo's "Dey Know". Anyway, when I saw this performed on Dave Chappelle, I looked at my bootleg like, "This is on here?" Instantly, this song became one of my favorite tracks off of College Dropout. I don't care too much for what is being said on here, Mos killed it, Kanye hit me with some out-of-the-blue lyricism, and Free was OK. I dig sampled beats that use the original artist's vocals. If the old and new vocals don't clash, it's a beautiful sound.
Lil Wayne "Hustler Muzik". Produced by TMIX & Batman. Using no samples, I look at this as Wayne's best song, "Yes, n!99@, yes!" This took me out of my sleeping stage on Wayne, however, I still wasn't convinced he's the best rapper alive. I think the feel of the beat is really what connects me to this track. The bass line drives me nuts and the "guitaring" is too dope. MY BEAT!
Raekwon The Chef "Glaciers Of Ice", produced by The RZA. It's not really the beat as much as it is the production and the sound. The alleged sample being used in this song is Booker T. & The MG's "Children Don't Get Weary". This is this is the only sample I cannot tell is being used in a song. I've combed this song front to back and I do not hear the snippet whatsoever. I guess that shows the superb technique of The RZA's beats. The singing vocals of whomever that is in the middle of the song is crazy to me. The laser gun shots in the back are what inspired me to make the M.T. Bag tag, in case you ain't know....Um, yeah....
N*E*R*D "Spaz", produced by Chad and Pharrell. This beat has been running through my head non-stop ever since they were advertising for the Zune $14.99 thing, remember? I dropped it out of my daily thought until recently when I started listening to A KiD Named CuDi, "CuDi Spazzin' ". Thus far, nobody, not even Pharrell treated this beat right. It sounds like Lupe should go on it to me. I guess I'm a sucker for a guitar...The guitar is too ill to me.
Three 6 Mafia "Poppin' My Collar", produced by Juicy J or DJ Paul, whoever I feel like crediting right now. Anyway, Three 6 aren't the most prolific samplers, but when they do, it's too crazy. You might be wondering why I didn't choose "International Player's Anthem". Well, the reason: during Bun-B's verse, I wouldn't have done the South snare thing, Nuff Said. Dope beats.
I'm going to eat, when it gets here...
